Brewing Philosophy

#brewedinboone

At Lost Province Brewing Company, we like to say we make “Authentic and Innovative Beers Done Right.”

To us, brewing is the ultimate blend of art and science. You’re generally taking biological materials, your knowledge and a little bit of math and chemistry to create a new product that previously existed only as an intention in your mind. The creative process is one of the most satisfying parts of brewing.

The brewing process itself is an amazing and fun experience. In our hands, brewing is driven by striving for continuous improvement in all parts of our brewing operations. We learn from our successes and our failures (yes, we have those too!) to expand our understanding of the brewing process and refine our “brewers’ intuition.” The real thrill is to have people enjoy our products, and the “fruits of our labors.”

What do we mean by “Authentic Craft Beers?”
What we’re really saying is that the beer is “technically and stylistically correct.” You see, every beer style has a time and place where it was developed, and in that way has its own unique story to tell. All beers were developed in specific regions of the world, where those regions had unique influences that shaped the local cuisine, both for foods and beverages. These regional influences were geographic, political, and environmental. These unique global combinations of influences lead to the development of many unique beer styles. Each style has recognized technical specifications like color, alcohol content, bitterness, flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, and more. We always compare the technical characteristics of the finished products with these specifications to promote stylistic accuracy.

Attempting to create a specific beer style means you must understand the characteristics of the beer and then try as best you can to recreate it. It doesn’t have to mean we use the equipment or practices that were used in the past. After all, we don’t live in that time or in those places. However, it does mean that we should faithfully
recreate those products as best we can and try to honor the traditions of those brewers who came before us. What this means is that we use the correct ingredients (malts, grains, hops, yeasts, and brewing water chemistry) for the style, used in the correct manner.

What do we mean by “Innovative Craft Beers?”
The goal is to create something enjoyable, new, and unique: a beer with special new attributes. We make these beers just for fun and because we can! Often, it means we take a recognized style of beer and give it a “twist.” One way that we like to do this is by adding a new ingredient that compliments or enhances the character of an existing flavor in a beer or adds a new flavor element. We also like to take a traditional process
or ingredient from one style and apply it to another style where it is not traditionally used. At Lost Province, we think that the process of creating these beers needs to introduce a fun or perhaps a whimsical element into these products. The words that come to mind when we think of these beers are new, surprising, interesting,
delightful, or delicious!
